Amatola Water’s training priorities are dictated by its Workplace Skills Plan, which is the product of a detailed performance development plan, skills audit and strategic objectives of the organization.

Amatola Water’s Workplace Skills Plan (WSP) is to support and sustain its strategic focus through training and development interventions. These interventions are to build capacity and enhance the abilities of the current and new employees of the organization. Training and development endeavours by Amatola Water form part of the principles that guide the approach adopted, to ensure the success of the primary business in supplying quality water. The development and provision of competencies central to the achievement of the business goals remains a priority for Amatola Water’s strategic role.

With the above in mind, in conjunction with the Energy SETA and the organization’s own strategic plan, Amatola Water will maintain its strategic focus on the following training interventions:
  • Technical Training i.e. Engineers, Technicians & Artisans
  • ABET
  • Management/Supervisory Development
  • Safety, Health Environment including Life skills
  • Information Technology
  • In-service training for students from tertiary institutions for a period not exceeding 12 months
  • Graduate Placement for students who have completed their qualification, for a period not exceeding 12 months.
  • Learnerships in Water and Wastewater Treatment for a period not exceeding 12 months.
  • Apprenticeships in the Engineering disciplines i.e. Fitting and Turning, Electrical, Plumbing, Welding, Bricklaying, Painting as well as Carpentry
  • Financial Study Assistance
  • Multi-skilling i.e. training Fitters and Turners in the electrical field
  • Bursary Scheme for internal employees and external previously disadvantaged students
  • Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

Opportunities at Amatola Water:

Graduate Trainee Programme
Our graduate Trainee Programme offers an exciting opportunity to Engineering graduates to learn, stretch and grow.

The graduate trainee programme is a 1 year, full-time programme that introduces candidates to extensive learning, and is offered to Mechanical, Electrical and Civil Engineering graduates.

Amatola Water offers learnerships to dynamic and self-motivated individuals with the intention on developing rare but critical skills that may be relevant to Amatola Water’s business activity and the waters sector as a whole. The learnership programme is geared towards both employed and unemployed people, mostly the youth with Maths and Science as their subject choice in Grade 12. The programme runs for 12 months.

In-Service Training
In this experiential learning programme, learners gain practical experience in line with their studies. Based on their academic performance, students are selected and placed with various departments within Amatola Water. This programme aims to provide opportunities to tertiary students who are in their final year of study to complete their required practical training.

This opportunity is open to students who are studying towards careers in the Scientific and Engineering fields. The period of this training programme ranges from 6 to 12 months.

Bursary Scheme
The Amatola Water bursary programme addresses the demand for high priority skills and is aimed at attracting selected full-time students in the Engineering field.

Severe shortages in numbers and the quality of graduates in this field have propelled Amatola Water to invest in this human capital development stream, so as to strengthen the national pool of graduates that enter the job market.

The bursaries are awarded to financially needy students studying towards an Engineering Degree in any of the institutions in the Eastern Cape.
